What Lifespend does (and doesn't do) with your data

This page exists because we got asked. Straight answers, no spin.

🔒 Your PDF statement

✓ Parsed entirely in your browser

When you upload a PDF, it is read and parsed by JavaScript running locally on your device. The raw file is never transmitted to our servers. You could disconnect from the internet after uploading and the parsing would still complete.

✕ We never receive your PDF

No PDF upload endpoint exists on our servers. There is nothing to intercept.

🤖 What goes to AI (Gemini)

After parsing, transaction descriptions are sent to Google's Gemini AI to auto-categorise them (e.g. "WOOLWORTHS" → Groceries). Only merchant names are included. Here is a literal example of what the AI receives:

🗄️ What we store in our database

After categorisation, we store your transactions so your dashboard persists between sessions. Per transaction we store:

✓Date — e.g. 2025-08-01

✓Merchant name — e.g. "Woolworths West End"

✓Amount — e.g. $14.30

✓Category — e.g. "Groceries" (assigned by AI or you)

✓Hours equivalent — e.g. calculated from your hourly rate setting

✓Excluded flag — e.g. whether you marked it as excluded from stats

We do NOT store:

✕Your account number or BSB

✕Account balances

✕Your full name or address from the statement header

✕The original PDF file

✕Any data from the statement beyond the fields above

🚫 Do we sell your data?

No. Never. Full stop.

We do not sell, share, license, or monetise your transaction data in any way. Our only revenue comes from the optional Pro subscription. Your data is never the product.

💳 Is it actually free?

Yes — and that will never change.

The core features of Lifespend are free forever with no credit card required. Uploading statements, viewing your dashboard, categorising transactions, and seeing your life-hours breakdown will always be available on the free tier.

We offer an optional Pro subscription for power features (custom themes, extended history, advanced charts). Pro is how we keep the lights on — it is not a paywall around the things that matter.

We are a solo Australian-built product, not a VC-backed startup optimising for an exit. We have no incentive to flip the model, lock down features, or sell your data to make up the difference. The free tier exists because we genuinely believe everyone should be able to see where their money goes.

🗑️ Deleting your data

You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Data → Delete Account. This removes everything — transactions, profile, settings — with no retention period.
